Matthew Bovee Redhorse Scholarship: Fall 2026 Applications Now Open

The Tommy Redhorse Journalism Scholarship, founded by Matthew Bovee, is now accepting applications for the Fall 2026 cycle. This scholarship supports the next generation of investigative journalists who demonstrate a commitment to truth, integrity, and holding power accountable.

What Is the Tommy Redhorse Scholarship?

Named in honor of Tommy Redhorse, my mentor at Camp La Junta in the Texas Hill Country, this scholarship represents more than just financial support. It’s a commitment to nurturing young journalists who understand that journalism is a calling—a responsibility to communities and to democracy itself.

Tommy Redhorse taught me that every great journalist starts somewhere. He saw potential in young people others overlooked, and he nurtured that potential with both high expectations and unwavering support. This scholarship is my way of continuing his legacy.

Who Is Eligible?

The scholarship is open to high school seniors and college students who demonstrate:

  • A genuine interest in journalism, particularly investigative or explanatory reporting
  • Financial need that might otherwise prevent pursue of journalism education
  • Academic promise, though we’re not looking for perfect GPAs—we’re looking for potential
  • A commitment to the ethical practice of journalism

Whether you’re interested in broadcast journalism, print media, digital storytelling, or documentary filmmaking, we want to hear from you. The scholarship is designed to help with tuition, books, and related educational expenses.

Key Dates for Fall 2026

  • Notification Date: December 1, 2026

These deadlines give you plenty of time to craft a thoughtful application. Don’t wait until the last minute—some of the best applications come from students who started early and really thought through their responses.

How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for the Matthew Bovee Redhorse Scholarship is straightforward, but it does require thoughtful preparation. Here’s what you need to submit:

1. Personal Statement

Your personal statement is the heart of your application. This is where we get to know you—not as grades on a transcript, but as a person with dreams, experiences, and a unique perspective on the world.

Tell us your story. What drew you to journalism? What stories do you feel compelled to tell? What moment made you realize this is what you were meant to do?

Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Share a failure that taught you something. Describe a moment of doubt and how you overcame it. These are the stories that matter.

2. Writing Samples

Submit two to three samples of your journalism work. These could be:

  • Articles written for school newspapers
  • Blog posts or online content
  • Podcast scripts or segments
  • Video reports or documentaries
  • Any other journalistic content you’ve produced

We’re looking for clarity, curiosity, and a commitment to getting the story right. Technical perfection matters less than demonstrates genuine journalistic instinct.

3. Letter of Recommendation

One letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or community leader who can speak to your character and potential as a journalist. Choose someone who knows you well enough to provide specific examples of your work ethic, integrity, and commitment.

4. Financial Information

To assess financial need, we’ll ask for basic information about your family’s circumstances. This helps us direct scholarship funds to students who need them most.

What Makes a Strong Application?

After reviewing hundreds of applications over the years, I can tell you what stands out:

Genuine Voice

The best applications sound like real people, not what applicants think we want to hear. Write like you speak. Be authentic.

Specific Goals

Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? Be specific. Don’t just say “I want to be a journalist.” Tell us what kind of journalism you want to practice and why it matters to you.

Understanding of Journalism’s Purpose

We look for applicants who understand that journalism is about service. It’s about giving voice to those who don’t have one, holding powerful institutions accountable, and helping citizens understand their world.

Tommy Redhorse used to say that journalists are witnesses. We witness what’s happening in our communities, our state, our nation, and our world—and we report what we see. Show us that you understand this responsibility.

Persistence and Resilience

Journalism can be frustrating. Stories get killed. Sources won’t talk. Editors demand rewrites. We want to see that you have the persistence to keep going even when things get tough.

Why Journalism Scholarships Matter Now More Than Ever

We’re living in an era when trust in media is being tested from every direction. Misinformation spreads faster than ever, and the business models that supported quality journalism are under strain.

This is exactly why scholarships like the Tommy Redhorse Journalism Scholarship matter. We need new voices—young journalists who understand both the traditions of the craft and the challenges of the digital age. We need people who are willing to do the hard work of verification, who will dig into complicated stories, and who will put truth first.

If you’re considering a career in journalism, now is actually an exciting time. New platforms are creating opportunities for storytelling that didn’t exist a decade ago. Audiences are hungry for credible, well-researched journalism. And there’s never been a greater need for reporters who can cut through noise and help people understand what’s really happening.

My Commitment to Future Journalists

When I established this scholarship, I made a commitment to the next generation of truth-tellers. That commitment extends beyond the financial award.

As a scholarship recipient, you’ll become part of a network of Tommy Redhorse Scholars—former recipients who are now working in newsrooms across the country. This network provides mentorship, job leads, and ongoing support as you build your career.

I also make myself available to scholarship recipients for guidance and advice. Whether you’re navigating your first internship, dealing with your first ethical dilemma, or celebrating your first byline, I’m here to help.

Ready to Apply?

If you’re passionate about journalism and ready to take the next step in your journey, I encourage you to apply for the Matthew Bovee Redhorse Scholarship. Take your time with the application. Be thoughtful. Be authentic.

And remember: every great journalist started exactly where you are now. Tommy Redhorse believed in me when I was a young aspiring reporter. I’m honored to pay that forward.
