What makes Camp La Junta special isn’t the facilities — it’s the people. This summer, I want to introduce you to some of the staff who make camp magical for hundreds of kids each year.
Maria Gonzalez — Program Director
Years at Camp: 12
Role: Program Director
Background: Maria first came to Camp La Junta as a camper in 1999. She returned as a counselor in 2011 and has worked her way up to Program Director.
“Camp taught me that belonging doesn’t mean being the best — it means showing up for others.”
Maria designs the activity rotations, trains counselors, and ensures every camper has a meaningful experience. Her attention to detail has made our programs more engaging than ever.
David Chen — Athletics Director
Years at Camp: 8
Role: Athletics Director
Background: Former college soccer player at UT Austin, David brings energy and expertise to our sports programs.
David redesigned our athletics curriculum to focus on inclusion over competition. Every camper now participates in at least three different sports during their session.
Sarah Redhorse — Arts & Crafts Director
Years at Camp: 6
Role: Arts & Crafts Director
Background: Tommy Redhorse’s granddaughter, Sarah returned to camp after finishing her MFA at RISD.
“Granddad always said art opens doors that are locked. I see that every summer.”
Sarah’s pottery program has become one of our most popular activities. Her patience with beginners and encouragement of creative risk have transformed our arts programming.
Marcus Williams — Cabin Leader
Years at Camp: 4
Role: Cabin Leader, Camp Bunks 7-8
Background: Former Camp La Junta camper (2008-2014), Marcus was one of our first scholarship recipients.
Marcus understands campers because he was once a camper — shy, unsure, and uncertain if camp was “for people like him.” Now he leads with empathy and purpose.
What They Share
When I asked what makes Camp La Junta special, they all said the same thing: the community.
Not the activities. Not the facilities. The people who keep coming back year after year to make sure every kid feels like they belong.
